NEW: Govt denounces political violence

POLITICAL violence is not a legitimate form of political expression, Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services permanent secretary, Mr Nick Mangwana, has said.

Mr Mangwana, tweeting on his official Twitter handle, said President Mnangagwa has often reiterated that there is no place for violence in Zimbabwe’s political landscape.

He said it was good to see the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) making efforts to combat the vice.

“Intra-party or inter-party violence are not legitimate forms of political expressions. It is tragic when these result in wanton loss of life. MOPA (Maintenance of Peace and Order Act) gives conveners of political gatherings a responsibility for the safety of people that congregate. They surely should not incite.

“The President has been emphatically clear when it comes to political violence, it is a no, no. Crime inheres in any society, but it will be met by an appropriate punishment. It is good to see arrests being effected. That’s part of an effective Criminal Justice System,” he said.
