GOVERNMENT has initiated and implemented a robust disaster risk management strategy to mitigate effects of natural disasters, Department of Civil Protection deputy director Dr Farai Hokonya has said.
Some of the programmes to fight natural disasters include the Meteorological Services Early Warning Systems, procurement of fire tenders for local authorities and the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme, among others.
“Government, under the New Dispensation, has taken cognisance of the numerous challenges natural disasters have posed to various communities around the country.
“In response, Government has embarked on a massive recapitalisation programme across the country’s 10 provinces,” said Mr Hokonya while presenting a paper during a disaster management workshop that was organised by ActionAid in Harare.
“These recovery and rehabilitation programmes have made milestones in the country’s drive towards preparedness and inclusive development.”
Stakeholders in the disaster management sector are meeting in Harare, where they are deliberating on how the country can enhance the national disaster management system.
