A NEW national action plan will soon be developed to address violence against children, a Cabinet Minister has said.

Speaking at the Child Budgeting Series meeting in Harare on Wednesday, Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Minister Professor Paul Mavima said authorities are also working on a new policy for orphans and vulnerable children.

“Government, with the support of the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef), is in the process of reviewing the National Action Plan for Orphans and other Vulnerable Children Phase III, and developing a successor programme that will incorporate strategies to address violence against children,” he said.

Speaking at the same meeting, Sweden’s chief envoy to Zimbabwe, Ambassador Åsa Pehrson, said child protection “requires a broad sector-wide coordination approach like the health and education funds”.

The event saw an exchange of knowledge and recommendations to shape interventions and investments in child protection.

The meeting was organised by Unicef and the Zimbabwe Economics Society.
