NEW: Govt to engage public over death penalty

Online Reporter

Government, through the Ministry of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs and its partners, will soon embark on countrywide consultations on the death penalty.

The exercise is being implemented with support from the Centre for Applied Legal Research (CALR) as well as the Embassy of Switzerland in Zimbabwe.

“After convening a high-level consultative meeting on the subject matter to inform policy formulation and law reform agenda, several recommendations were proffered in the meeting,” reads the Ministry of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs in a statement.

“One major reason highlighted was to amass public opinion on the subject matter. Against this backdrop, the ministry shall hold consultations at the grassroots level in March 2023 across the country’s provinces.”

Government will conduct preliminary training-of-trainers’ engagements with case care workers, village health workers and youth officers ahead of the actual consultations.
