GOVERNMENT has warned land barons that are name dropping the name of the ruling party – ZANU PF – to take over land that belongs to the State or private developers.
Speaking during a tour of the Homelux Development Project in Harare South on Tuesday, National Housing and Social Amenities Minister Daniel Garwe, said the Government will not allow land barons to disturb the national housing programme.
“Today is the last day we see a land baron in this development. This programme is a partnership with Government and the private sector, and there is no space for land barons,” he said.
Minister Garwe said there are stiff penalties for land barons.
“This is a stern warning, land barons will be locked up, and we have no apologies for that.
“They are a disgrace in the efforts that the Government is putting in place to provide decent affordable and sustainable housing to Zimbabweans,” he said.
“The President has spoken strongly against the mushrooming of illegal settlements, and this is not the time to continue allowing people to build illegally on land that they do not own.”
