NINE out of the country’s 10 provinces have reported suspected cases of cholera, prompting Government to heighten surveillance.
Only Matabeleland North remains unaffected.
As of Sunday, Zimbabwe’s cumulative suspected cases had reached 536, with 503 recoveries and three deaths.
During a post-Cabinet media briefing on Tuesday, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said Government is on guard to prevent a full-blown outbreak.
“Zimbabwe’s cumulative suspected cases has reached 536, with 503 recoveries and three deaths,” she said.
“The most recent suspected cases (six) were reported in Midlands province, while the worst affected provinces are Matabeleland South, which recorded 186 cases, and Manicaland with 152 cases.”
Zimbabwe is among 14 African countries that have reported cholera outbreaks since the beginning of the year.
“Cabinet wishes to assure the nation that the cholera risk assessment is ongoing in all provinces in order to determine the targeting of oral cholera vaccination,” said Minister Mutsvangwa.
“Active surveillance is ongoing at entry and exit points, while water and sanitation provision is being intensified in communities.
