THE Down Touch Griffons maintained their unbeaten run in the Carling Currie Cup First Division with a 33-25 victory over Valke.
They will now go into the final round of games this weekend with a spotless record in the competition.
The win saw the Griffons maintain their grip at the top of the table, with 44 points from eight matches.
Eastern Province’s bonus point 36-5 victory over the Zimbabwe Goshawks saw the Elephants remain second with 31 points from eight games.
The loss was Zimbabwe’s third in a row and saw the Goshawks drop one rung on the log table to ninth, with 12 points from eight matches.
Boland Kavaliers (26), Black Lion and Valke (24) complete the top teams in the competition, coming in third, fourth and fifth, respectively.
Making up the bottom half of the table are SWD Eagles (24), Leopards (18), Kenya Simbas (13), Zimbabwe (12) and the winless Border Bulldogs.
However, Goshawks gaffer Brendan Dawson is sure to have kept his eye on the Griffons’ victory over Valke this past weekend, as they are Zimbabwe’s last opponents in the competition.
The Valke game will also be the first opportunity for Dawson to watch his Rugby Africa Cup and 2023 Rugby World Cup Qualifiers’ squad in action.
Zimbabwe is expected to announce the squad on Friday, after which the team will have two matches against Valke and the Netherlands before heading off to France for the eight-team Rugby Africa Cup.
The Test against the Netherlands is slated for June 25 at the Rugby Stadium Amsterdam, while the Rugby Africa Cup is scheduled for July 1 to July 10.
