GOVERNMENT is creating hundreds of new jobs through the construction of the multimillion-dollar Gwayi-Shangani pipeline.
The pipeline will help ease Bulawayo’s current water woes and restore its past glory as the country’s industrial hub.
The country’s second largest city has seen the closure of industries due to water shortages, with some companies either relocating to Harare or closing shop completely.
However, the Second Republic has seen the Gwayi-Shangani Dam project moving with traction, and is now at 60 percent completion.
Full completion is targeted for December 2022.
The dam started holding water last December.
The Zimbabwe National Water Authority (Zinwa) signed a mega deal with South African company, Flowtite, to supply all the pipes for the whole project with work on the pipeline expected to start in the coming weeks, in the process creating hundreds of jobs for locals.
Zinwa corporate communications and marketing manager, Mrs Marjorie Munyonga has confirmed that work on the pipeline is commencing in weeks and will create hundreds of jobs in both upstream and downstream industries.
“This is a one-of-a-kind project of this size and scope, with hundreds of jobs expected at its peak,” Mrs Munyonga said.
“A total of 11 contractors are expected to work on the 252 kilometres long pipeline project, which will certainly create hundreds of jobs, including for both upstream and downstream industries and sectors.
“Zinwa is working on the final stages of awarding the contracts and by next week the winning contractors are expected to be shown the site in preparation for the commencement of the project.”
