A 26-year-old man and a self-styled doctor were ordered to perform 350 hours of unpaid work after they were found guilty of forcing the former’s Form 3 Lord Malvern High School girlfriend to abort.
Dennis Mahewu, of Glen Norah C Extension, Harare, and a self-styled medical doctor, Narini Patswawairi (25), who calls himself Doctor Bolt, were initially jailed for 12 months when they appeared before Mbare magistrate Ms Rangarirayi Priviledge Gakanje.
Ms Gakanje suspended two months for five years on condition of good behaviour and ordered the duo to perform community service for the remaining months.
Ms Janet Mlambo, prosecuting, had it that sometime in April this year, the girl discovered that she was pregnant and confided in her boyfriend, Mahewu.
Mahewu then decided that they terminate the pregnancy, and the girl agreed.
On May 11, 2024, at around 2pm, Mahewu invited the Form 3 learner to his place of residence in Glen Norah C Extension, where he introduced her to Patswawaira.
Mahewu told his girlfriend that he had hired Doctor Bolt to terminate the pregnancy before asking her to undress.
Doctor Bolt then inserted a pill into the girl’s vagina and advised her not to remove it.
The following day, the girl started bleeding and informed her boyfriend, who told her that the abortion had been successful.
The matter came to light after the girl’s health continued to deteriorate.
