MANICALAND did not record any incidents of serious injuries to people or major damages to infrastructure across the province following rains received over the past few days, the provincial Civil Protection Unit chairperson Mr Edgars Seenza has said.
However, the only adverse report received so far is that of a nine-year-old boy who was struck by lightning and died on the spot in Chimanimani District at the weekend.
In an interview, Mr Seenza urged the public to continue taking heed of weather reports and forecast as well as advisories issued by the Meteorological Services Department (MSD) and the Department of Civil Protection respectively.
“The province did not have large scale disasters at all during the period between Friday and Sunday when heavy rains were expected to pound parts of Manicaland. The only loss of human life recorded involved a lightning incident in Chimanimani District, but otherwise I can safely confirm that no worrisome catastrophes have been recorded. We certainly hope that the torrential rains will cause no further damage if they continue,” he said.
The MSD had forecasted localised heavy rains in excess of 50mm and flash flooding in areas with saturated soils, wetlands and along river basins in parts of Manicaland, Masvingo and Midlands provinces.
