NEW: Herd boy sells stolen gun to employer

A herd boy from Mutadzakupa Village in Chihota recently sold a gun stolen from a security company by his brother to his employer, landing himself and his boss in court where they escaped with a fine.

Phenias Sibanda (25) and his employer, Thomas Nyakabau (35) of Plot 14 Belvedo Farm in Goromonzi, appeared at the Harare Magistrates’ Court and admitted to possessing an unregistered firearm.

They were fined US$300 or the equivalent in local currency. They risk being jailed for three months if they fail to pay the fine.

In addition, the court sentenced the duo to a wholly suspended six months, on condition that they did not commit a similar offense within that period.

The court that on April 24, 2024, detectives were told that Phenias had a firearm, thereby leading to his arrest in Mahusekwa.

Upon being questioned, he implicated his brother, Tinashe Sibanda.

Tinashe indicated that he had sold the firearm to Nyakabau through Phenias, leading to his arrest and subsequent recovery of a .38 Taurus Revolver loaded with two rounds of ammunition.

The firearm was found near Nyakabau’s homestead.
