Nicholas “Gokwe Boy” Hwende, who holds the Extreme Fighting Championship (EFC) bantamweight title, will not be in action at EFC 102 on Thursday.
The Zimbabwean prize fighter is set to sit out the event as he awaits the identity of his next challenger for the coveted title.
Hwende has defended the title in the co-main event of the last three EFC specials.
His last fight came during the EFC 101, during which he took out South African Roevan de Beer, courtesy of a verbal submission after his opponent’s right shoulder popped out of its socket.
The win took the Zimbabwean’s record to six wins in six fights in the EFC.
All eyes will therefore be on Ziko Makengele and Mark Hulme, as the two will fight it out for the EFC welterweight title, which is currently held by the former.
Makengele won the title last year after he defeated Martin van Staden, while Hulme is a product of the famed Team CIT.
CIT has produced a host of EFC champions, including current UFC stars Cameron Saaiman and Dricus du Plessis.
The latter is presently involved in a war of words with UFC’s new middleweight champion Israel Adesanya.
The latest spat between the two came soon after Adesanya won back his middleweight crown after beating long-time rival Alex Pereira at UFC 287 over the weekend.
During the press conference after the event, ‘The Last Stylebender’ took aim at du Plessis and said he intends to “drag his carcass” all over his home country.
Dricus has since hit back and took to Instagram with his response.
“So, you won’t say my name, that’s smart you better not,” Dricus said.
“I don’t need your airtime at all, I have my whole continent of Africa behind me.
“Go enjoy your very spectacular victory at home in New Zealand,” he wrote.
