THE Independence flame was lit today in Harare and left the capital for the Midlands province for the official launch of the series of activities leading up to the main Independence Day commemorations in Gokwe on April 18.
Vice President Dr Constantino Chiwenga will preside over the launch at Mutapa Hall in Gweru on Thursday.
The convoy, which was being escorted by the police, left the Museum of Human Sciences in Harare in style, parading the flame and drawing the attention of citizens who lined up the streets to get a glimpse of the symbolic flame.
In an interview, Museums and Monuments regional manager for Southern region, Mr Lovemore Mandima, said the flame will arrive in the Midlands in time for the official launch of the Independence Day commemorations.
“So, today, the independence flame is moving from the capital city of Zimbabwe to the Midlands province, where the launch of the 2025 independence commemorations shall be done tomorrow by the Vice President, Dr Constantino Chiwenga, at Mutapa Hall, which is a historical site,” Mr Mandima said.
