NEW: Katongomara dominates early Golden Boot race

Online Reporter

UNHERALDED Manica Diamonds veteran striker, Lloyd Katongomara, is one of the few old horses defying age and dominating the early race for the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League Golden Boot.

It is still early days, but the race for the 2021/22 top goal scorer award could turn out to be historic if the first games of the season are anything to go by.

The 33-year-old Katongomara leads the PSL scoring charts with five goals in an as many matches.

He bagged a hat trick when Manica Diamonds routed a hapless Whawha 4-0 in their opening league match on November 7, 2021.

Katongomara was on target again last Sunday, as his brace helped the “Gem Boys” to a historic 6-2 win against CAPS United at Sakubva.

The former Buffaloes man now enjoys a remarkable scoring rate of a goal per match.

Maintaining that rate could probably see Katongomara breaching the 20-goal mark that was last attained by Norman Maroto for Gunners back in 2010.

Breathing hot on Katongomara’s neck are his teammates, Tichaona Mabvura and Nyasha Chintuli, who have scored four goals apiece.

Chintuli, however, scored his goals when he was still at Ngezi Platinum Stars, before joining the Manicaland side in January.

Chicken Inn’s forceful striker, Brian Muza is also on four goals after his solitary striker sunk Dynamos at the National Sports Stadium last Sunday.

Little known Jayden Barake has scored three goals for Whawha, who sadly, have the worst defence in the league, having shipped in 14 goals in five matches.

Manica Diamonds, who are enjoying a purple patch, are currently the league’s highest scoring team with 14 goals, six ahead of second placed Chicken Inn.

Giants, Dynamos and Highlanders, have scored two goals each in 450 minutes of action, which should be a worrying statistic for coaches, Tonderai Ndiraya and Mandla Mpofu.

However, the least scoring team so far in the league are Cranborne Bullets, who have one goal to their credit.
