African Union (AU) Commission chairperson, Dr Moussa Faki, has reiterated SADC’s call for the immediate and unconditional removal of illegal sanctions imposed against Zimbabwe by the United States and its Western allies.
In a statement on Wednesday morning, Dr Faki said he remains concerned by the negative impact of continued sanctions against Zimbabwe, adding that the Commission stands in solidarity with SADC in calling for the removal of the embargo.
“The chairperson of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat renews the African Union demand for the immediate and unconditional removal of sanctions imposed against the Republic of Zimbabwe, and in support of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) commemoration of SADC Anti-Sanctions Day,” reads the statement.
“The chairperson remains concerned by the negative impact of continued sanctions against the Republic of Zimbabwe to the country’s socio-economic development and recovery efforts.
“The chairperson reaffirms the commitment of the African Union to continue working closely with the Southern African Development Community to support all regional efforts, and in this regard, the African Union associates itself fully with the statement issued by President Lazarus Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi and current chairperson of SADC.”
