LLOYD Mutasa may have disappeared from the Premiership radar, but the former Dynamos coach is still very much in the trenches and working in the Eastern Region Division Soccer League, where his side, Green Fuel, are making waves.
Mutasa, who had been attached to TelOne in the Central Region, is now in charge of Green Fuel.
Last weekend, he watched his ambitious Chiredzi outfit run riot and thump Zaka Academy 8-0.
Green Fuel found their goals via a brace each by Leroy Murape and Lucky Itimu, before Marshal Mudehwe, Cleopas Kapupurika, Kith Chikotora and Edward Jera added one apiece.
They had settled down by the ninth minute when Itimu opened the floodgates.
Murape added the second in the 23rd minute.
Mudehwe then ensured a healthy half-time lead for Mutasa’s men when he scored four minutes before the break.
Green Fuel did not take the foot of the pedal in the second period, adding more goals through ex-Dynamos and Chicken Inn forward Kapupurika (61st minute) and Itimu and Murape again in the 73rd and 78th minutes, respectively.
There was still time for Chikotora and Jera to add their names to the score sheet when they found the target in the 83rd and 86th minute.
Mutasa felt they could have reached double figures had his charges not wasted a number of good chances that came their way.
“We created many chances and missed a number of chances against Zaka Academy.
“Our conversion rate was not as good as we expected. I will work with the team to improve our efficiency in front of goal.
“But, scoring eight goals in a match is very positive and we wish to carry that momentum going forward, in all our matches, if we are going to have a say at the end of the day.
“It’s still early days to talk about promotion, as we have not yet played many games yet.
“We are still to play a number of teams that are performing well. Gaining Premiership qualification is a marathon; it doesn’t come off at once,” Mutasa said.
The Eastern Region was the last to get off the blocks among the country’s four regional Division One Leagues.
But with Mutasa having brought in a blend of youth and experience, it is looking good so far for Green Fuel.
“We have the ability to keep on winning. We will reflect on our work and cover the ground and see how it goes,” said Mutasa.
Green Fuel remain in control of the league, topping the standings with 14 points from eight matches, one point above Ruwa Progroup in the 16-team league.
