A major milestone towards curbing sexual harassment in the public service workplace was realised on Wednesday after Cabinet approved the Zimbabwe Public Sexual Harassment Policy, which is meant to ensure the protection of workers’ dignity in the public service.
Addressing a post-Cabinet briefing on Wednesday, acting Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr Jenfan Muswere said: “Government is committed to creating a conducive public service workplace environment free from sexual harassment, exploitation and abuse.”
The policy’s objectives, he added, include providing a safe working environment that is free from sexual harassment, supporting diversity and inclusive work practices, and promoting respect amongst all people in the workplace.
Dr Muswere said the elimination of gender-based violence and harassment in the workplace is central to the attainment of the targets of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5 on gender equality through the elimination of barriers that hinder full participation, empowerment and progress of public servants in the workplace.
“Going forward all quasi-public sector entities will be directed to develop Sexual Harassment Policies in line with this policy, while issues of sexual harassment will be incorporated into the Public Service Act, the Health Service Act and the relevant Statutory Instruments.”
