LOCAL Government and Public Works Minister, Honourable Daniel Garwe has appointed Engineer Edmore Chidembo as the new and substantive Makoni Rural District Council Chief Executive Officer.
In a communique to Makoni RDC acting chairperson, Councillor Ellah Hlanguyo, Minister Garwe confirmed the appointment after a thorough review of the interview process conducted by her council, as directed by the Rural District Councils Act.
“Receipt is acknowledged of the literature related to the interviews for the post of Chief Executive Officer at Makoni Rural District Council. In terms of Section 66 (3)(b) of the Rural District Councils Act (Chapter 29:13) on Appointment of Officers and Employees of Council, you are hereby notified that Mr Edmore Chidembo has been appointed the substantive Chief Executive Officer for Makoni Rural District Council. If he fails to take up the post, then Mr Ishmael Jachi be offered the post,” reads the letter copied to the Director of Local Government Services and Administration and Makoni District Development Coordinator.
Councillor Hlanguyo expressed satisfaction with the appointment of Engineer Chidembo, citing his extensive institutional knowledge as the key factor in his selection.
“As Makoni RDC, we are delighted that Engineer Chidembo has been appointed as the substantive Chief Executive Officer. His impressive track record includes nine years of experience in Local Government, coupled with academic credentials in civil and water engineering, as well as a Master’s Degree in Public Sector Management. He is currently pursuing a doctorate in Local Governance.
“We are excited to have him on board, and look forward to leverage on his expertise in local governance to deliver exceptional services to the district. We aim to adopt the best practices to enhance our service delivery, identify areas for improvement, and implement effective solutions that will positively impact our community.
“We eagerly anticipate his leadership and vision, which will undoubtedly propel our council to greater heights. We are confident that he will be up to the task,” said Councillor Hlanguyo.
Makoni RDC is the largest local authority in Zimbabwe in terms of size and population, covering an impressive 8 200 square kilometres, with a population of approximately 244 000 people.
The council comprises of 39 wards and five constituencies, which were formed in 1990 after the amalgamation of Tsungwesi, Makoni, Maungwe, and Macheke rural councils.
Engineer Chidembo takes over from Dr Edward Pise, who was fired last year following sharp disagreements with the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works.
Makoni RDC has a commercial arm called Maungwe Investments, which focuses on agroforestry and sports tourism ventures.
