A VIBRANT new business mall has opened its doors in the heart of Bulawayo’s Central Business District (CBD), promising to be a springboard for small businesses and a hub of cultural and commercial activity.
Located along Jason Moyo Street, Ilanga Mall officially opened on 30 June and is set to provide a modern, flexible platform for entrepreneurs and startups to grow their ventures.
Once home to a bank, the site has been transformed into a dynamic small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) complex. A visit by the Chronicle revealed an active construction zone, with workers hammering away as the finishing touches are made.
Inside, visitors are welcomed by a vibrant staircase gallery adorned with iconic images of music legends across genres such as jazz, kwaito, Amapiano, hip-hop and Afro. The tribute wall includes greats like Oliver Mtukudzi, Sandra Ndebele, Lucky Dube, AKA, Killa Kau, Mpura, and Hugh Masekela — a creative homage to Zimbabwe and Africa’s rich musical heritage.
Later this year, the mall will add a gaming facility to boost its entertainment offering and attract even more foot traffic.
Marketing and content manager, Mr Trust “Uncle Chris” Makumbinde, said the mall’s transformation was designed with small businesses in mind.
“By turning a former bank into a space for SMEs, we wanted to create a cutting-edge facility that also enhances the city’s visual appeal,” he said.
“We envision the mall as a catalyst for economic growth in Bulawayo. By giving small businesses access to a wider audience, we’re playing our part in promoting entrepreneurship and innovation. Our goal is to create a thriving ecosystem where local businesses can flourish.”
The mall’s prime location ensures steady customer flow, giving small traders visibility in a competitive market. Management has introduced flexible leasing options tailored to accommodate startups and micro-businesses.
“With its unique blend of culture, commerce and entertainment, this mall is set to become a central feature in the city’s economic and social life. Our team is working hard to ensure its equipped with modern infrastructure and provides an enabling environment,” said Mr Makumbinde.
He said the impact of the mall is expected to ripple beyond the business community.
“By supporting small businesses, the mall will create jobs and stimulate the economy, ultimately improving livelihoods. We’re not just building a mall; we’re building a community that celebrates local talent and brings people together,” he said.
Sinokuthaba Dube, a boutique clothing trader, is among the many entrepreneurs eager to open shop at Ilanga Mall.
“This mall is a game-changer for us. We’ll be able to reach a wider audience and showcase our products to people who may not have seen them otherwise. We’re looking forward to being part of this vibrant community,” she said.
Ilanga Mall is poised to become one of Bulawayo’s key landmarks — a fusion of tradition, enterprise and future-forward thinking.
