NEW: Man jailed 24 years for raping and robbing a commercial sex worker

A 32-year-old man from Tshitaudze suburb in Beitbridge has been jailed for an effective 24 years for robbing a commercial sex worker of cash and a cell phone before raping her once at knifepoint.

Moses Mukonowenzou denied charges of robbery and rape when he appeared before Beitbridge regional magistrate Ms Charity Maphosa but was convicted on the strength of the State’s evidence.

For the charge of robbery, Mukonowenzou, was left with eight and half years effective in prison and 15 years effective on the other charge of rape.

Prosecuting, Mr Willbrought Muleya said on January 9 this year while it was raining the accused who is known by the complainant went to his victim’s house for sexual services.

He knocked on the window to the house asking the complainant to open the door for him for transactional sex.

Upon entering the house, Mukonowenzou grabbed the woman by her neck demanding money and her cell phone.

He was given R200 and a Nokia C10 cellphone all worth R800. He then raped the complainant while threatening to stab her with an okapi if she screamed.

Mukonowenzou then ordered the victim to open the door for him soon after committing the offence.

When he left, the woman informed another tenant about the incident and was advised to report the matter to the police who arrested Mukonowenzou.
