Police in Chegutu have arrested a man after he attempted to burn down the local district lands offices, in a fit of rage on Monday.

Josiah Garamukanwa (77) is facing charges of malicious damage to property, following his ill-fated arson attempt.

In a statement, police said Garamukanwa visited the lands offices to inquire about his application for land, before inexplicably attempting to burn down the building.

“On leaving the premises the suspect produced a plastic container containing petrol, which was hidden in a plastic bag, and poured it in the corridor before setting the building on fire,” said police.

“The suspect tried to escape but the police officers who were on surveillance acted swiftly and arrested him.

“The fire brigade extinguished the fire before any documents were destroyed.”
