Commemmorations that draw attention to the environment are effective ways through which governments and environmental activists have been using to raise awareness on contemporary challenges affecting the environment.
Zimbabwe recently observed the World Wetlands Day, which is celebrated on the second day of February every year.
However, March seems to have most commemmorations.
On March 3, the world will observe World Wildlife Day and three weeks later – March 18 – marks the Global Recycling Day.
Environmentalists will again celebrate the International Day of Forests on March 21, which coincides with World Wood Day.
World Water Day is held a day later.
The last item on the environment calendar is Earth Hour on April 22, a day on which lights will be switched off for an hour as a symbol of a broader commitment toward nature and our planet.
Mr Hardlife Mudzingwa of the Community Water Alliance (CWA), an organisation that tackles environment and climate issues, emphasised the importance of the month of March to environmentalists.
“March is a busy and important month for environmentalists. As the CWA, we are particularly interested in World Water Day. We are going to partner our stakeholders, among them the Government, as we mark this important day,” Mr Mudzingwa said.
