ZIMBABWE is making progress towards the achievement of data sovereignty.
This comes as State telecommunications company, TelOne on Thursday launched its expanded Mazowe Data Centre.
According to TelOne, Mazowe Data Centre’s capacity has been expanded by 150 percent.
Officiating at the launch, ICT, Postal and Courier Services Minister Dr Jenfan Muswere said the expansion sets the foundation for the fulfilment of the National Development Strategy One (NDS1).
“The expansion of the Mazowe Data Centre is a firm foundation for the implementation of the National Development Strategy One (NDS1) which requires that we set up a sound digital economy.
“Certainly, NDS1 rides on an efficient digital infrastructure to ensure two-way communication between Government and its citizens and the efficient gathering and storage of data,” he said.
“I have taken a particular interest on the subject of data sovereignty, which should never be underestimated.
“This project therefore enhances our data sovereignty by ensuring that the personal information of Zimbabweans, which is a valuable commodity in the global market, is kept within our borders for use by our people to bring value to the nation at large,” said Minister Muswere.
Said TelOne managing director, Mrs Chipo Mtasa:
“TelOne has been investing in the Data Centre business more aggressively, cumulatively spending at least US$4 million in the past four years for a total of 1300m2 of floor space,” she said.
