Defence Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri has urged the commanders of the Zimbabwe National Army and the Zimbabwe Defence Forces to continue their commitment to defending the nation’s territorial integrity, while shaping the future of the defence force.

Speaking during the transition of the Zimbabwe National Army command from General Emmanuel Matatu to Lieutenant General Asher Walter Tapfumaneyi, Minister Muchinguri-Kashiri said the commanders bear a significant responsibility.

General Matatu is now commander Zimbabwe Defence Forces. “Today, you are both honoured to serve as the Chief of Defence Forces and the Commander of the ZNA, respectively,” she said.

“It is crucial to acknowledge that the responsibilities bestowed upon you are formidable.

“You are the ones who will determine the success of defending Zimbabwe’s territorial integrity, as well as shaping the future of our defence force.

“Your decisions directly impact the men and women in the ranks. Your conduct in these leadership positions must inspire confidence among our young men and women who aspire to join the force.”

Minister Muchinguri-Kashiri encouraged members of the ZDF to uphold the values of hard work, discipline and a positive mindset, particularly in their support for the incoming Commander of the ZNA, in the same manner they supported the outgoing Commander.

“It is heartening to note that both of you have illustrious military careers that span from the liberation struggle to independent Zimbabwe,” she said.

“You joined the liberation struggle at a young age, fought valiantly for our freedom, and played vital roles in the formation of the Zimbabwe National Army through the integration process. Subsequently, you have diligently served in the Zimbabwe Defence Forces and risen through the ranks.”

Under General Matatu’s stewardship, Minister Muchinguri said, the Zimbabwe National Army has remained disciplined, dependable and mission-focused.

“You are handing over a force that is stable, orderly, and professional, reflective of the highest standards of the men and women who serve under our national flag,” she said.

She commended Lieutenant General Tapfumaneyi for having rightfully earned his appointment.

“Your vision and experience are invaluable assets, and I am confident that under your guidance, our military will continue to excel, innovate, and uphold the highest standards of professionalism and integrity.”
