Norton Town Council has banned the construction of pit latrine toilets in a bid to curb the contamination of underground water sources.

“Norton residents, the business community and institutions are informed not to construct pit latrines,” the local authority said in a statement on Wednesday.

“They are urged to liaise with council’s environmental health and engineering personnel on the best ways for disposing of human waste.

“Also, institutions making use of open spaces for worshipping purposes are urged to make use of mobile toilets.”
