THE National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) has procured drones to help maintain and reduce theft of railway assets.

According to the 2025 Zimbabwe Infrastructure Investment Programme, the NRZ has also deployed CCTV at strategic points across the country.

“As part of measures to reduce theft of railway assets, the NRZ has procured drone technology, installed CCTV at strategic sites and invested in access control,” reads part of the document.

“Given the capital-intensive nature of rail infrastructure, Government will continue to explore sustainable funding options for the recapitalisation of the National Railways of Zimbabwe, focusing on rehabilitation and upgrading of rail infrastructure, procurement of equipment and replacement of rolling stock.”

During the first half of 2024, NRZ reported that it had lost infrastructure worth US$35 000 to vandalism and theft.
