Leader of the opposition party, People Unity Party (PUP), Mr Herbert Chamuka, has congratulated President Mnangagwa for assuming the chairmanship of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
President Mnangagwa was handed over the leadership of the regional bloc at the 44th SADC Summit held at the New Parliament building in Mt Hampden, Harare, on Saturday.
He took over the chairmanship from Angolan President Joao Manuel Goncalves Lourenco.
Mr Chamuka, who has been retained as PUP leader, welcomed the development as he believes President Mnangagwa has a crucial role in national and regional politics.
“As PUP, we would want to congratulate Zimbabwe President HE Emmerson Mnangagwa for assuming the chairmanship of the SADC,” he said.
“This is a welcome development which we have always wanted as Zimbabwe, we have always said that President Mnangagwa should lead SADC.
“We believe that as the President now heads SADC, he should also lead all political parties in Zimbabwe because he is father to us all.
“His leadership qualities are now for everyone in the SADC region and the world to see, he has done well in developing the country and we are confident that his astute leadership qualities will be felt in the region.”
Zimbabwe has undergone a massive transformation under President Mnangagwa’s Second Republic.
Some of the key issues that have been addressed by his government include road and infrastructure development, women and youth empowerment as well as and job creation.
“We are ready to work with any party that wants to see Zimbabwe going forward in terms of development,” said Mr Chamuka. “Again, we say congratulations to President Mnangagwa, Shumba, for being elected to lead SADC.”
