NEW: Police clamp down on cross border crimes

Online Reporter

Criminals continue to wreak havoc on the country’s boundaries with police arresting another 375 individuals for cross border crimes in recent days.

Cross border crimes, mainly smuggling, have a negative impact on the local economy due to lost revenue.

But, with the Covid-19 pandemic still a concern, border jumpers pose additional risk of spreading the virus, especially as South Africa recently detected a new variant that could potentially be more infectious.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) says it is not going back on clamping down on cross border crimes with nearly 47 000 people having been arrested since the operation was launched earlier in January.

According to a police statement on Monday, 375 people were arrested over the weekend.

“375 people were arrested on 05/09/21 across the country for cross border crimes,” said ZRP.

“46 911 people have been arrested throughout the country since the commencement of the operation in January 2021.”
