Police have seized drugs and illicit substances worth $438,6 million and arrested 6 156 suspected dealers and peddlers, as Government heightens the fight against drugs and substance abuse.

Anti-drug information dissemination and campaigns in hot-spot areas are presently being undertaken by provincial and district strictures.

Government has also since established an outpatient rehabilitation and psycho-social support centre in Harare, while similar centres will be set-up in other provinces.

Addressing Tuesday’s post-Cabinet briefing, acting Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr Jenfan Muswere said: “The nation is being informed that progress recorded to date includes the following: drugs and substances worth $438 654 692 were intercepted under Operation Clean-Up Zimbabwe, with 6 156 accused persons being arrested and prosecuted across the country.”

A National Plan of Action, which requires, among other things, that the law enforcement units specialising in drug and substance abuse response be decentralised, has since been adopted.
