AS calls for the multi-sectoral approach to tackling drug and substance abuse grow louder, police in Manicalnd are rolling out awareness programmes across the province to sensitise communities on the need to combat the scourge.

Government is spearheading various initiatives to eliminate the illegal use of drugs and other dangerous substances, with churches and development partners also joining hands to step up the fight.

Officer Commanding Manicaland Province, Commissioner Priscilla Makotose, said community involvement is important in complementing other stakeholders’ efforts.

“As the police, we continue playing our part in combating drug and substance abuse in our communities and are rolling out programmes to raise awareness on the dangers the scourge poses to society. Its harmful effects are not only felt by individuals, but families as well and society at large.

“When young people get involved in drugs, their involvement to the meaningful contribution towards the development of their communities and the country is severely hampered. We have to work together to ensure that our future leaders are a drug-free generation,” said Commissioner Makotose.

Commissioner Makotose reiterated the police’s warning against drug peddlers, saying the law enforcement agents have declared war on such miscreants.

She said police in Manicland are working tirelessly to bring sanity to the province’s drug peddling hotspots.

Drug and substance abuse’s serious health and social impact is being widely felt across many communities.
