The Ministry of Health and Child Care, in partnership with World Health Organisation (WHO) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), will conduct a four-day, door-to-door polio vaccination programme this month.

The blitz will run from July 28 to July 31, and targets children under five years.

In a statement, WHO Zimbabwe said the vaccinations will be conducted through home visits, as well as at health centres and public areas.

“Health workers will visit homes to vaccinate children and will paint the child’s left thumb to indicate that the child has been vaccinated.

“Health workers will also conduct the vaccinations in health centres, markets, churches, bus stations and other public places,” reads part of the statement.

The campaign is in response to polio outbreaks in Malawi and Mozambique, which has placed Zimbabwe at high risk.
