NEW: ‘Psychosocial support key for children with disabilities’ inclusion’

PSYCHOSOCIAL support is a key element in the drive to promote the inclusion of children with disabilities in developmental processes, a local organisation has said.

 

This has resulted in at least eight wards in Chipinge and Chimanimani districts benefitting from psychosocial support training programmes being implemented by Regional Psychosocial Support Initiative.

In an interview, the organisation’s programmes coordinator, Mr Clever Ndanga said they are aiming to equip and support families and communities to provide for the needs of children with disabilities and ensure inclusivity.

“All children, especially those with disabilities, require psychosocial support to enhance their psychological and emotional wellbeing. This promotes their physical and mental development. One of the best forms of effective psychosocial support is healthy families and supportive communities. As Regional Psychosocial Support Initiative, we are working with families, communities and other organisations to achieve this end.

“To ensure that children with disabilities are in school, we have also joined hands with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education. Through several initiatives, we are supporting the children by paying their tuition fees and providing school uniforms for them,” he said.

Mr Ndanga added that their main goal is to mainstream psychosocial support in the disability inclusion drive.
