Star FM owned by Zimpapers hit the airwaves almost two months ago while ZiFM owned by AB Communications started broadcasting on Wednesday.
Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Media, Information and Communication Technology chairperson Mr Settlement Chikwinya yesterday descri-bed the coming on board of the two stations as a welcome development.
“Our sincere hope is that they offer media diversity and plurality and that they will give other independent players outside the state an opportunity to air their voices,” Mr Chikwinya said.
“I am yet to hear ZiFM but have listened to Star FM and I respect the type of professionalism currently displayed by men and women at that station. We hope ZiFM can equally do better.”
Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe chief executive officer Mr Obert Muganyura said his organisation was elated at the launch of the two stations.
He said the two stations had an obligation to provide a service within the statutory period of 18 months.
