RESIDENTS in Chikanga and Hobhouse have bemoaned the erratic refuse collection in their areas by Mutare City Council.
The situation has led to people dumping waste at undesignated sites, thereby posing a serious health risk of an outbreak of diseases.
“The Council is not colleting refuse on time and this has seen garbage piling up, with people resorting to dumbing it at undesignated points. As residents, we feel shortchanged as we are paying our rates and tariffs on time. We are living in constant fear of disease outbreaks,” said Clara Mahumbe of Hobhouse.
City spokesperson Mr Spren Mutiwi acknowledged that they are facing challenges in maintaining consistency in their refuse collection schedule.
He said: “We are facing challenges in that regard as we currently have a depleted fleet to carry out the service. Our refuse compactors have also aged and are failing to cope with the increasing waste collection demand.”
