THE Southern African Development Community (SADC) Military Health Services Committee has praised Zimbabwe’s Geo Pomona Waste Management facility, describing it as the best of its kind on the continent.
Following a familiarisation tour of the facility on Wednesday, Brigadier General Jackson Kasela of Zambia, the outgoing Chair of the SADC Military Health Services Working Group, expressed his admiration for the project, noting that it far surpassed his expectations.

“I have never seen anything like this before,” Brig Gen Kasela said. “Initially, we were told we were visiting a dump site, but what we encountered was something completely different.
“The site is well-organised and incorporates recreational facilities. I even joked with the CEO that I could eat my lunch here. It’s truly impressive.”
He added that the facility serves as a model for sustainable waste management and expressed hope that similar initiatives would be adopted across the SADC region.

Brig Gen Godfrey Mutetse of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF), who is taking over as Chair of the Working Group, echoed the sentiment.
“We found the Geo Pomona Waste Management site to be a fitting example aligned with the themes of our Annual General Meeting,” he said.
“The facility’s operations support several Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in promoting good health and well-being.
“It’s encouraging to see practices such as waste reduction, recycling, and reuse being implemented so effectively.”

Dr Dilesh Nguwaya, CEO of Geo Pomona Waste Management, reiterated the company’s commitment to contributing to public health and environmental sustainability.
“Effective waste management is closely linked to health,” he said. “Our aim is to create a cleaner and healthier environment by responsibly collecting and processing waste.”
Dr Nguwaya also revealed growing regional interest in the facility’s approach to waste management.
“We’re currently engaging with countries like Lesotho, Botswana, and Madagascar,” he said. “We’re also working with local authorities, including the City of Mutare and the City of Masvingo, to replicate our model.”
The Geo Pomona Waste Management project continues to position itself as a regional leader in sustainable environmental solutions.
