New Scotland star Denton targets consistency

Denton, who was named man of the match in his Six Nations debut against England at Murrayfield last Saturday, believes he has a huge role to play if they are to win tomorrow.
As witnessed in his second Test game for Scotland, the diminutive number eight went into the game with just 23 minutes of Test experience having come in as a second half substitute against Ireland in a pre World Cup match against Ireland. But last Saturday he was the biggest thing in Murrayfield and, despite losing to England, he had what it takes to walk away as the Man of the Match in his first start for Scotland.
“For me it’s about being consistent. I’ve got to go out there and do the same as I did at the weekend and show I’m not just a one-game guy, which I’ve done for Edinburgh all season.
“Hopefully I can continue getting us on the front foot and over the try-line,” Denton told the Scottish media. Just his performance in the Calcutta Cup last weekend has seen the 22-year-old being tipped to make it for the Lions side. He was playing for Edinburgh Accies and Stirling County only 18 months ago before he was offered a professional deal by Edinburgh.
But he feels he still has a lot of ground to cover if he is to make it for the Lions.
“I was grateful for the chance and the senior guys helped me a lot. There was quite a bit of expectation on me but I coped.
“I saw some people were talking about me and the Lions but it’s still early days. I’ve only played one Test match.
“I’m thankful to the people who have given me that kind of credit but there is a long way go and you must be consistent over a period of time. I’m glad to say that I’m quite grounded. I just want to play for Scotland right now and at the end of the England game all my emotions were taken down a notch with the loss.
“I don’t feel any added pressure going into the Wales game because of the way I played against England.
“The build-up to the game with England was incredible – my folks even came over from South Africa so I was sorry we couldn’t get them a win. It was a dream to make my first start in the Six Nations, running on to the field was something I’ll never forget. It’s an opportunity not many people are given in their life.”
Denton, however, says he does not underrate Wales and knows what they are capable of doing.
“We watched Wales beating Ireland on Sunday and they did well. They have good ball carriers and it’s about shutting these guys down. We have the ability to do that. I believe we can win. Wales have a lot of powerful players but you must have belief in yourself and your team-mates. We’ve worked a lot on our line breaks this week. We have players who are more than capable of scoring tries but it’s about making the breaks together. We need to be aware of where players will be.
“They’ve been doing really well, but it’s a challenge we can come out on top of. There’s a lot of strength in depth in the Welsh squad and they did well at the World Cup, so they’re going to have their tails up.
“For us it’s about going out there, playing our game and winning. It’s small things. International rugby is about very small margins and it’s just about getting those right. Hopefully that’s too much for them to handle.”
