The Sinovac Covid-19 vaccine – one of the four being used in Zimbabwe – has been approved for emergency use by the World Health Organisation.
In a statement on Tuesday, the UN body said: “WHO today validated the Sinovac-CoronaVac Covid-19 vaccine for emergency use, giving countries, funders, procuring agencies and communities the assurance that it meets international standards for safety, efficacy and manufacturing. The vaccine is by the Beijing-based pharmaceutical company Sinovac.”
The vaccine was granted emergency use authorisation by the Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ) in March.
Zimbabwe is approved the Sputnik V (Russia), Sinopharm (China) and Covaxin (India) vaccines.
