The federation was registered with the Sports Commission last year in December and will soon be a member of the Federation Aeronautique Internationale (FAI), the world governing body of all aviation sports, and the US Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA).
These two international bodies will provide the sporting codes and technical notices for the development of model flying.
The sport infuses topics in maths, science and technology with aviation activities.
AMFZ president, Lawrence Madamombe, said the idea behind the sport is to teach children science through sport.
“This is a big sport all over the world with 98 countries and in Africa there is Mali, South Africa and Mozambique. It’s like the Olympics.
“The idea is to teach kids science through fun and play,” said Madamombe.The AMFZ boss also said that they are now set to register with the world bodies since they are now recognised by the Sports Commission.
“We got recognition from Sports Commission in December last year and that makes us the motherbody of the sport of all model aviation in Zimbabwe.
With that, we can now apply for affiliation with the international bodies,” said Madamombe.
The association’s national co-ordinator, Patrice Chakanyuka, said the sport has always been there but they are now making it official.
“This (sport) has always been there as a recreational sport and we are now making it official and we want to put Zimbabwe on the international map.
“This used to be there and was done at the Harare Showgrounds, in Ruwa and Dzivarasekwa as a recreational sport.
“On March 2, we are going to do a demonstration to show how the sport is done. We are just waiting for the rain season to lapse and after April, registration starts. We are targeting everyone but our thrust is on the kids,” said Chakanyuka.
The AMFZ will be the sole advisor to the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe on all matters relating to model flying in this country.
