NEW: Sugar bean harvesting commences in Middle Sabi

SUGAR bean farmers in Middle Sabi are expecting a good yield this season, with harvesting of the crop having commenced.

In an interview, Middle Sabi farmers association chairperson, Mr Sikhumbuzo Thondhlana said the prolonged cold weather had significantly contributed to a promising harvest as sugar bean flourish under cold conditions.

He said farmers are looking forward to their crop fetching a fair price on the market and local communities are also expecting improved livelihoods.

“Farmers have just started harvesting sugar bean in Middle Sabi. We are optimistic that we will get a better yield this season. Most of the farmers are using manual forms of splitting. However, we have a farm that is using a combined harvester.

“So far, everything is on course to a successful harvest and this is good for local communities’ livelihoods as well as improved food and nutrition sufficiency,” said Mr Thondhlana.

Mr Thondhlana said sugar bean farmers in Middle Sabi require support to capacitate them in improving production of the crop.
