SWEDEN has extended SEK 60 million (or US$5,8 million) to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Harare to support child protection programmes in the country.
Speaking at the signing ceremony on Tuesday, Sweden’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Asa Pehrson, said the grant seeks to protect children against violence in schools, homes and online.
“The latest grant, of SEK 60 million through UNICEF’s child protection programme, is part of the on-going financial support availed by the Swedish Government to Zimbabwe in support of UNICEF’s country programme for 2022- 2026,” she said.
UNICEF representative to Zimbabwe, Dr Tajudeen Oyewale, said:
“I am pleased to note that from the session discussed last year, the Government of Zimbabwe has increased allocation in the budget towards social welfare.
“From the side of Sweden, the investment has also increased, so I feel that the discussions we had last year is making an impact and we are grateful.”
The funding will be used in 10 districts namely, Binga, Chiredzi, Bulilima, Buhera, Zvishavane, Mbire, Epworth, Beitbridge, Mutasa and Bulawayo.
