ZAMBIANS yesterday united in mourning the loss of former President Dr Edgar Chagwa Lungu, who died at Mediclinic Medforum Hospital in Pretoria, South Africa.

He was 68.

Dr Lungu’s death was confirmed by his daughter and parliamentarian, Ms Tasila Lungu-Mwansa.

He served as Zambia’s sixth President from 2015 to 2021, before losing an election to current President Mr Hakainde Hichilema.

His Patriotic Front party acting president Mr Given Lubinda confirmed the development and said funeral arrangements will be communicated later.

Zambia’s former Information Minister Dr Chishimba Kambwili expressed shock and disbelief at the loss of a man he described as his “boss, friend and elder brother”.

“My President, my boss, my friend. President Lungu, you have shocked us. This is such a massive blow. I cannot believe you are no more. Rest in peace, my elder brother. May God receive your soul,” Dr Kambwili said.

Zambia’s former Attorney-General Mr Musa Mwenye said President Lungu was a “very down-to-earth man” who could connect with people.

“I have learnt of the death of former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu with extreme sadness. Former President Lungu was Minister of Justice when I served as Attorney-General. I had the privilege of interacting with him both in public and in private. His ability to connect with people at a very personal and human level won him many admirers.

“Sadly, Zambia has lost another former President. Sincere condolences to the former First Lady, Mrs Esther Lungu, and the entire bereaved family,” said Mr Mwenye.
