NEW: Truck driver-cum-musician charms mining communities

The name ‘Captain Manex’ might not ring a bell to most sungura music fans.

However, for those that reside in farming and mining communities of Mashonaland West Province, it is synonymous with merry-making.

Captain Manex (born Emmanuel Chipucha) is a truck driver-cum-musician, whose songs are mostly popular in farming and mining communities such as Nyabira, Mutorashanga and Mazowe, among others.

Fronting the Orchestra Horizon Band, Captain Manex’s song “Malume” is a clear favourite at drinking spots in these areas.

The Sunday Mail Online recently caught up with the musician during a live show at Spar Farm in Nyabira, where he had attracted a huge crowd.

The song “Malume”, which is taken off the six-track album “Mhezi yeRudo”, was clearly the crowd’s favourite, as fans frequently begged the musician for an encore.

The upcoming musician’s songs are often mistaken to those produced by either Tatenda Pinjisi or Simon Mutambi.

“My career as a truck driver takes me away from my fans most of the time,” said the Mhondoro-Ngezi-born artist, who frequently travels between Zimbabwe and South Africa.

“I will one day retire and concentrate on music full-time. It is my wish to work with upcoming musicians from disadvantaged communities.”
