Villagers in Dete have apprehended two self-proclaimed diviners, popularly known as ‘Tsikamutanda’, for allegedly stealing four cattle from the local grazing areas.
The duo was also found in possession of snake skins and dead owls, which they used to perform their rituals.
The incident happened on Sunday before the two were handed over to police on Monday.
Local villagers who spoke to The Sunday Mail said the pair, who claimed to be Zion Church ‘prophets’, had settled in the area after they were given land to settle by a local headman.
They would use the bloodcurdling paraphernalia of snake skins and dead owls to intimidate villagers during ‘cleansing’ ceremonies.
Councillor Cosmas Mwachipasa of Ward 16, Lupote said:
“It is true, they stole beasts from the grazing area and killed them before selling the meat to unsuspecting villagers for little as US$1 for 5 kgs.”
He said the offence was discovered on Sunday after herd boys, who had gone to gather cattle for penning, discovered fresh hides in the grazing area.
“They then followed a spoor of blood to the prophets’ homestead.
“They advised other villagers, who followed up and discovered cattle’s heads and legs buried underground.
“A report was made to the police leading to their arrest on Monday,” he said.
Councillor Mwachipasa appealed to headmen to advise other traditional leaders, police and the Chief about visitors coming to settle in the area, so that they are vetted.
Matabeleland North police spokesperson, Sergeant Namatirai Mashona said she was out of office.
