FRESH details have emerged in the heartbreaking death of Umguza headmaster Mncedisi Nyathi, revealing that the 52 year old Nyamandlovu Primary School head was the one driving when the fatal crash happened in Bulawayo at around 4.30am.
Police have now confirmed the full circumstances of the accident, which occurred as the school heads were returning from the Kariba Naph conference. A routine early morning drive turned into a nightmare along 4th Avenue extension between Clark Avenue and Pauling Road.
Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele said, “Police confirms receiving a fatal road traffic accident which occurred along 4 avenue extension between Clark Avenue and Pauling Road, Bulawayo where one died and 05 passengers were injured.”
She added more detail, painting a clearer picture of the moment tragedy struck.
“On November 29 and at around 0430 hours a male adult aged 52 years of Nyamandlovu was driving a Toyota Hiace along 4th Avenue extension due east with 5 passengers on board when he lost control of the vehicle which veered off the road and hit a tree stump. As a result of the accident, the now deceased died on the spot.”
The revelation that Nyathi himself was behind the wheel adds a new layer to the unfolding story, which has shaken the education community across Matabeleland North.
Inspector Msebele said the body of the deceased was taken to United Bulawayo Hospitals mortuary for post mortem while the injured passengers were rushed to hospital and are now in stable condition.
Police say the accident serves as yet another stark reminder of the dangers of night and early morning driving, urging motorists to take safety seriously.
“Police urges all the motorists to always exercise extreme caution and keep a proper lookout when driving to avoid loss of lives,” said Insp Msebele.
