NEW: Unity key to development: VP Chiwenga

Vice President Dr Constantino Chiwenga has called on Zimbabweans to remain united and look out for one another in love, saying such values are critical to national development and improving livelihoods.

He made the remarks in Honde Valley on Wednesday during the burial of Mrs Callista Chimhini, sister to Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Lieutenant General (Rtd) Anselem Sanyatwe.

VP Chiwenga said the spirit of unity, selflessness and good neighbourliness had enabled Zimbabweans to successfully resist colonialism and attain independence, adding that the same values should now drive the country’s economic development agenda.

He paid tribute to Mrs Chimhini, praising her contribution to the liberation struggle through the medical assistance she rendered to freedom fighters during the war.

“We are here to mourn our sister. She left behind a good legacy, a legacy of love. She was a hero of service, always helping others. I myself can testify to her love,” said VP Chiwenga.

“She was a nurse. She began her nursing work during the liberation struggle, and I operated in this area in 1978. I passed through here while traveling to Chihota and came back through this same place in 1978.

“Let us help one another. I can see there are people of my age here, so let us remain united and work together to develop the country we fought for. A country develops when we are united,” said VP Chiwenga.

The Vice President was accompanied by his wife, Colonel Miniyothabo Chiwenga.

Also in attendance were Minister Sanyatwe, Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development Felix Mhona, Zanu PF Politburo member Lieutenant General (Rtd) Engelbert Rugeje, among other senior Government officials.
