A HARARE woman is in the habit of assaulting her mother-in-law whenever her husband beats her up.

This was revealed at the Harare Civil Court where Fosina Masaire was seeking a peace order against her daughter-in-law Rumbidzai Kunaka.

Masaire told the court that Kunaka is violent and abusive.

“She comes and beats me up after being beaten up by her husband. She insults my female genitalia and she uses her hand and legs to hit me,” said Masaire.

“Two weeks ago, she beat me up to the extent that I fell and had to consult a doctor over the injuries. She is very violent even against her child. The child comes to me crying, asking for protection from her.

“She once came to the house and entered her father-in-law’s room while he was naked and started damaging a television set. I called Childline and they are taking care of the case of her abusing her child.”

In her defence, Kunaka said she only goes to Masaire’s place for consolation after being beaten up by her husband.

“My husband once beat me up and it affected the spot where I once had an operation. I poured hot water on him and I ran away to my mother-in-law’s place,” she said. “That is when I accidentally entered my father-in-law’s room while he was naked.

“As for my son, the only time I beat him up was when he got injured while playing. I do not abuse him, I just beat him up like any mother would to their children.”

Magistrate Ms Meenal Naratam granted Musaire a peace order and warned Kunaka against being violent.
