NEW: Woman dumps baby in a river

Police have arrested a woman for dumping her four-month-old baby in Mukwe river in Mashonaland West last Friday. 

According to police, the body of the victim was found trapped in a tree along the river. 

In a statement on Wednesday, police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said: 

“The ZRP confirms the arrest of Naume Jemwa in connection with a case of infanticide which occurred at Mukwe River on February 25, 2022, where she threw her four-month-old baby into the river. 

“Alert villagers noticed that her baby was missing and confronted her before she confirmed the heinous act. The body of the minor was recovered whilst trapped by a tree along the river.”
