YOUNG leaders should lead by example and take a leading role in the country’s socio-economic development, a diplomat has said.
Speaking during the Institute of Corporate Directors Zimbabwe (ICDZ) 40 Under-40 awards ceremony in Harare, Malawian Ambassador to Zimbabwe Mr Mwayiwawo McLloyd Polepole said young leaders should help Government formulate policies that transform people’s lives.
“Ladies and gentleman, this platform is vital in enhancing engagements with our young leaders as it contributes largely to the strengthening of good governance, promoting inclusivity and consolidating Zimbabwe’s socio-economic development processes,” he said.
“I want to remind all of you that the successful implementation of any country’s national development strategy is not the sole responsibility of its government but requires the commitment and dedication of everyone across the socio-economic spectrum, especially the young people.
“It is in this spirit that I want to call other young leaders to take the example of your colleagues who are gathered here today to stand up and identify opportunities that are abound in the economy.”
ICDZ acting executive director Dr Proctor Nyemba said the purpose of the awards is to recognise young leaders who are making a difference.
“As Institute of Corporate Directors Zimbabwe, we have seen the gap in the country in terms of training people to become professional corporate directors. We have got the women, men and the elderly in our training. But these awards are specifically to recognise young people who are doing great and need to be appreciated,” he said.
The annual awards saw the recognition of Minister of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation Dr Kirsty Coventry, her deputy Mr Tinoda Machakaire and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development Dr John Basera and other executives who made the list of 40 youthful leaders below 40.
