YOUTHS have been urged to take a leading role in conserving the environment.

On March 26, 2022, Zimbabwe joined the rest of the world in commemorating Earth Hour, a worldwide movement organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

The event is held annually to encourage individuals, communities and businesses to turn off non-essential electric lights for one hour from 8.30pm to 9.30 pm on the last Saturday of March as a symbol of commitment to the planet.

The Zimbabwe chapter of WWF organised a number of activities as part of the Earth Hour commemorations.

Overall, WWF is an international non-governmental organisation working in the field of wilderness preservation and the reduction of human impact on the environment.

This year, Earth Hour’s theme was “Shape Our Future”, which resonates with the organisation’s focus to support youths to take a leading role in environmental conservation.

Zimbabwe’s child president Hazel Mandaza said Earth Hour commemorations play an important role in environmental conservation.

“Such occasions remind us of the importance of conserving our environment and nature. Earth Hour reminds us to take charge of our environment,” she said, while speaking during commemorations in Marondera.

“It is not only for the love of nature now but for the concern of future generations that we should conserve our environment.”

WWF Zimbabwe country director Dr Enos Shumba called for humanity to unite and preserve the earth.

“This Earth Hour 2022 we call on everyone to unite in solidarity for people and the Earth. We face many challenges but we should ensure that 2022 remains a critical year for this planet – our shared home.

“We should all take positive action to ensure we have a world where people and nature are able to thrive together,” said Dr Shumba.

Calls for increased ambition and urgent action to halt and reverse nature loss by 2030 continue to grow louder.
