NEW: ZESA to switch off defaulting mining companies

Online Reporter

THE Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) says it will switch off some mining companies over ballooning debts to the power utility.

ZETDC is a subsidiary of the national power utility, Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA).

Official figures show that the country’s mining companies are in arrears of US$37 million and $400 billion to the power company.

Said ZETDC acting general manager Mr Howard Choga this week:

“Mining sector companies owe the power utility a total US$37 million and $400 billion in local currency.

“The money owed is in operating payment plans; that is how we have arrived at the balance.

“Those not paid up will be switched off. Our collection rate ranges from 106 percent to 110 percent.”
